MEDITE Summary

MEDITE is a premium MDF brand made in Ireland by MEDITE Smartply, part of the Coillte forestry group. It is widely regarded as the benchmark for quality and consistency in the MDF market.

Cworkshop supplies Medite boards at both branches, as full sheets or cut to size. The range covers everyday panels for furniture and shopfitting, plus specialist grades for fire rated, exterior and low emission work.

Why Choose MEDITE MDF?

Medite MDF is a medium density fibreboard made from wood fibre bonded under heat and pressure. The fibre comes from Coillte's own managed forests in Ireland, and the boards are pressed at the Medite plant in Clonmel, County Tipperary. What separates Medite from generic MDF is control of the density profile. Each board is engineered so that the core and the faces hold a predictable, even density across the whole sheet and from one sheet to the next.

That consistency is why Medite cuts cleanly, routs to a crisp profile and takes paint with far less filling and sanding. It is also not a single product. Medite is a family of around ten MDF grades covering more than 400 specifications, and each grade is built for a different job. Standard, moisture resistant, fire rated, exterior, acetylated and no added formaldehyde boards all sit under the one name, built to the same standard.

History of MEDITE

The brand began in Medford, Oregon, where the MEDITE Corporation was among the first companies to manufacture MDF at commercial scale. The first samples reached Europe in 1976, at a point when the material was still largely unknown here. Demand grew quickly, and by 1980 the decision had been taken to build a mirror image of the Medford plant at Clonmel in County Tipperary. The Irish mill began production in September 1983, the first of its kind in Ireland.

It soon became one of the largest MDF plants in Europe, exporting the great majority of its output. The mill changed hands several times as the panel industry consolidated, passing to Willamette Industries in 1996 and to Weyerhaeuser in 2002. In November 2006 it was acquired by Coillte, the Irish state forestry company, which already owned the Smartply OSB mill in Waterford. The two were later brought together as MEDITE Smartply.

Sizes and Thicknesses

Medite is supplied in standard sheet sizes. Cworkshop can supply:
2440 x 1220mm, 2440 x 1525mm, 3050 x 1220mm and 3050 x 1525mm.

Thicknesses across the range run from 3mm up to 36mm, though not every grade is made in every thickness. The specialist grades have a narrower choice than the standard ones.

Sustainability and Certification

MEDITE is manufactured by Coillte, which manages a large area of certified forest in Ireland. Fibre for the boards comes from those forests, which keeps transport distances short and the supply chain traceable.

MEDITE panels are CE marked and comply with the EU Timber Regulation. MEDITE holds FSC certification as a manufacturer.

MEDITE has also led the market on lower formaldehyde emissions. MEDITE Clear takes that furthest, using a binder with no added formaldehyde at all.

Health and Safety

MDF dust is a hazardous substance. It contains wood dust and cured resin, and the particles are fine enough to reach deep into the lungs.

When cutting, routing or sanding MDF:

Use extraction at the tool wherever possible
Wear a properly fitted FFP3 mask
Wear eye protection
Clean up with a vacuum, not a brush
Follow current HSE guidance on wood dust

One good reason to have us cut your panels: the dust stays in our extraction system rather than your workshop.
