Board types and classifications.

MDF Grades Explained

If you have come here looking for something like plywood's B/BB or CC grading, there is a short answer worth having up front. MDF is not graded that way.

Plywood is graded on the visual quality of its face veneers, because plywood is made of natural wood and every sheet looks different. MDF has no veneers, no knots, no voids and no grain. There is nothing to grade visually, because one sheet of standard MDF looks essentially identical to the next.

What people actually mean by "MDF grades" is one of four separate things, and they get run together constantly. This guide separates them out.

The four systems are the European board type classification under EN 622-5, the product ranges manufacturers sell, the fire reaction classification, and the formaldehyde emission class. A single board carries a rating in all four at once.

System one.

EN 622-5 board types

This is the closest thing to a formal grading system. EN 622-5 is the European standard for dry process fibreboard, and it defines board types by two things: whether the board is intended for dry or humid conditions, and whether it is load-bearing.

Two distinctions in that table do most of the work.

Dry versus humid is not about waterproofing. "Humid conditions" in the standard means service class 2, which covers occasional or seasonal high humidity, not wet conditions or exterior exposure. An MDF.H board is suitable for a bathroom or a kitchen. It is not suitable for outdoors, and it is not waterproof.

Load-bearing versus general purpose matters far less than people assume in furniture work. Almost all MDF sold through merchants for joinery, cabinetry and panelling is general purpose, non-load-bearing. If you are specifying structural panels you should be reading the standard.

You will rarely see these codes on a merchant's website. They appear on the declaration of performance and the CE or UKCA marking, which is where to look if a specification calls for a particular type.

The important gap in the standard

Here is the detail that catches people out, and that most guides to MDF grades leave out entirely.

Exterior MDF and fire retardant MDF are not covered by the EN 622-5 classification system at all.

Both exist, both are widely sold, and both are manufactured to their own performance specifications. But there is no EN 622-5 type code for them, so you cannot specify them the way you would specify MDF.H. For those boards you work from the manufacturer's datasheet and, in the case of fire performance, from the Euroclass rating covered further down.

That is not a flaw in the products. It is a reason to read the datasheet rather than assume a type code covers what you need.

System two.

The product ranges you actually buy

This is what people are usually asking about. Manufacturers build ranges around use case, and these are the names you will see on a merchant's site.

The dyeing convention is worth knowing on site. Green usually means moisture resistant and red usually means fire retardant, but the colour is a manufacturer's identification aid rather than a standard. Never specify or accept a board on colour alone, because colour conventions vary between manufacturers and a dyed board tells you nothing about which grade of MR or which Euroclass of FR you are holding.

Note that faced boards also exist in moisture resistant versions, so you are not choosing between a facing and MR performance. You can have both.

System three.

Fire classification

Fire performance uses the European reaction to fire classification, which runs A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F, with A1 the best. Two suffixes come with it: s for smoke production and d for flaming droplets, each on its own scale.

Untreated wood-based panels sit at Euroclass D by default. Standard MDF is a Euroclass D board, and no amount of paint or lacquer turns it into anything else in a way you can certify.

Fire retardant MDF is manufactured to reach Euroclass B or Euroclass C. Class B is the higher performance of the two, and it is what specifications for public buildings typically call for.

The practical points are these. If a specification names a Euroclass, standard MDF will not meet it above D, and you need an FR board. If you are cutting FR board, the fire performance is a property of the board rather than a coating, so cut edges retain it. And a Euroclass rating is usually declared above a minimum thickness, so check that the thickness you are buying carries the rating you need.

System four.

Formaldehyde emission class

MDF is bonded with resin, and most standard MDF uses a urea-formaldehyde system. Emission classes describe how much formaldehyde the finished board releases.

E1 is the European standard class, and effectively all reputable MDF sold in the UK meets it. Treat E1 as the baseline rather than a selling point.

Below that sit the lower-emission specifications. CARB Phase 2 is the Californian standard and TSCA Title VI is the US federal equivalent, both of which many European manufacturers now meet as a matter of course. Zero added formaldehyde boards go further again by using a resin system that adds no formaldehyde during manufacture, which puts free formaldehyde well below the E1 threshold.

Zero added formaldehyde boards are worth specifying for schools, nurseries, museums, laboratories, healthcare settings and any project with an indoor air quality requirement. For a painted wardrobe in a spare room, an E1 board is entirely appropriate and the premium is not doing anything for you.

One caveat on the zero added formaldehyde boards: they are interior dry condition products and are not moisture resistant. If you need both properties you are looking at a different board, not this one.

MDF density.

Why "high density MDF" is a confusing term

You will see MDF described as standard, lightweight, ultra-light or high density. This is a real distinction but the naming is genuinely misleading.

Density in MDF varies with thickness even within a single product range. A 3mm board is considerably denser than a 30mm board of the same product, because the compressed face layers make up a larger proportion of a thin board. So a "standard" 3mm sheet can be denser than a board sold as high density in a thicker section.

Lightweight and ultra-light boards use a genuinely lower density core, which is where the EN 622-5 codes L-MDF, UL1-MDF and UL2-MDF come in. They are lighter to handle and easier on tooling, at the cost of screw holding and edge quality. They suit display work, exhibition builds and anywhere weight is the binding constraint. They are a poor choice for cabinet carcasses that carry load or take hinges.

For most joinery, density is not the specification you should be leading with. Choose on moisture, fire and finish requirements first, and let density follow.

So what grade do you actually need?

Work through it in this order.

Start with moisture. Will the board see humidity? Kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and boot rooms mean moisture resistant. Anywhere genuinely outdoors, or exposed to rain, means an exterior grade board rather than MR. MR is not an exterior product and using it as one is the single most common specification mistake with MDF.

Then check fire. Is there a specification calling for a Euroclass? Public buildings, commercial fit-outs, escape routes and some rental properties will. If nothing calls for one, standard MDF at Euroclass D is what almost all domestic joinery uses.

Then check indoor air quality. Is this a school, nursery, museum, laboratory or healthcare setting, or is there a project requirement on emissions? If so, specify a zero added formaldehyde board. If not, E1 is fine.

Then think about finish. Will the edges be exposed and unpainted? A coloured through-body board saves you edging. Is the board getting painted anyway? A primed board saves you a stage, and spray finishing saves you the whole job.

Finally, think about weight and thickness. See the MDF sheet sizes guide for what each grade is actually stocked in, because the specialist grades come in narrower thickness and sheet size ranges than standard MDF. That constraint bites more often than people expect, particularly on exterior grades.

A note on ordering.

Specialist grades cut to size

One thing worth knowing before you specify. The specialist grades are stocked in fewer thicknesses and fewer sheet sizes than standard MDF, and some are held in a single thickness only.

That matters most when your design needs a long part. Exterior grades, for example, are commonly available in the longer sheet in only one thickness. If your design depends on a 25mm exterior part longer than a standard sheet, you will find that out at the ordering stage rather than the design stage unless you check first.

Ordering cut to size removes most of the handling problem with these boards, several of which are heavier than standard MDF. It does not remove the availability constraint, so check the stocked thicknesses in your chosen grade before you finalise anything. Parts can then be edgebanded or CNC machined in the same order.
