In the 1950s, veneered chipboard was developed and became a viable solution to the lumber shortage after World War II. Because it was new, chipboard was still an expensive product but became cheaper over time when production technology improved. The ’70s saw an advance of Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC) which took the furniture production market by storm. Although the layer of melamine is usually only 0.3mm in thickness, it provides additional strength to the panel and adds an appealing look by way of stone or woodgrain reproductions.

Shortly after that, MFC quickly became the primary wood product used for mass-produced furniture, including kitchen worktops and flooring panels.
