What Is Tricoya MDF?

Tricoya MDF Cut to Size

MEDITE Tricoya Extreme Boards

Tricoya is an exterior-grade MDF made from acetylated wood fibres. It is designed for long-term use in wet and demanding environments, including exterior joinery, signage, cladding and garden buildings. Unlike standard MDF, it has very low moisture movement and excellent resistance to fungal decay.

If you need an MDF panel that will be exposed to British weather, MEDITE Tricoya Extreme is one of the main options to consider. It is more expensive than ordinary or moisture-resistant MDF, but its durability can make it worthwhile where replacing a failed panel would be costly.

You can check the available specifications, sizes and technical downloads on our MEDITE Tricoya Extreme board page.

The basics.

What is Tricoya MDF?

Tricoya is a medium-density fibreboard manufactured using acetylated wood fibre. Acetylation is a chemical modification process that reduces the wood fibre’s ability to absorb water. The treatment changes the fibre itself rather than simply adding a waterproof coating to the finished board.

This gives Tricoya much greater dimensional stability than standard MDF. It is particularly useful for exterior applications where ordinary MDF would swell, lose its shape or cause a paint finish to fail.

The product we stock is MEDITE Tricoya Extreme, a high-performance MDF board intended for demanding exterior and interior environments.

Moisture resistance.

Is Tricoya Waterproof?

Tricoya is often described as waterproof MDF, but “exterior-grade” and “highly moisture-resistant” are more accurate descriptions. It is engineered to withstand prolonged exposure to moisture and weather, rather than relying on a surface coating to protect ordinary MDF.

Its low moisture uptake means the board expands and contracts much less as conditions change. That helps joints, routed details and paint finishes remain stable.

Tricoya Extreme also has a published Durability Class 1 to EN 350 and a manufacturer’s warranty of up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground or freshwater, subject to the applicable terms and installation requirements. Check the current technical and warranty documents before specifying it for a particular project.

Common applications.

What is Tricoya Used for?

Tricoya is best suited to applications where moisture exposure, dimensional stability and long service life matter more than the lowest sheet price.

Application Why Tricoya is suitable
Exterior fascias and soffits Low moisture movement helps maintain joints and coatings.
Garden rooms and buildings Suitable for exposed panels, cladding details and exterior joinery.
Outdoor signage Routes cleanly and holds detailed shapes in changing weather.
Shopfronts Useful for shaped fascia panels, lettering and decorative details.
Wet interior environments Can be used where ordinary or MR MDF may not provide enough moisture resistance.
Planters and garden furniture Offers excellent durability for demanding outdoor applications when correctly designed and installed.

For CNC-cut lettering, shaped panels and exterior signs, Tricoya is especially useful because it combines the machinability of MDF with much better outdoor performance.

Choosing the right board.

Tricoya vs MR MDF vs Exterior MDF

Not every damp environment needs Tricoya. The right board depends on whether it will face occasional humidity, sheltered exterior conditions or direct weather exposure.

Board Best suited to Key limitation
Standard MDF Dry interior furniture and joinery Not suitable for prolonged moisture exposure.
MR MDF Humid interiors such as kitchens and bathrooms Moisture-resistant does not mean weatherproof.
MEDITE Exterior MDF Exterior applications within the manufacturer's specified exposure conditions Requires appropriate detailing and protection.
MEDITE Tricoya Extreme Demanding exterior and wet-environment applications Higher material cost.

Tricoya or MR MDF

MEDITE MR MDF is a more economical choice for a kitchen, bathroom or utility room which is not be exposed to weather.

For exterior projects.

When is MEDITE Exterior enough?

MEDITE Exterior MDF can be a suitable alternative for exterior projects where its published performance and installation requirements meet the specification. It is worth comparing the exposure, expected service life and coating requirements before choosing Tricoya.

Long-term performance.

When is Tricoya worth the extra cost?

Choose Tricoya when the panel will face demanding moisture conditions, when dimensional stability is especially important, or when access and replacement costs make long-term performance a priority. It is often the stronger specification for exposed exterior joinery, outdoor signage and high-value garden buildings.

For structural applications, check the required structural performance and use a material specifically approved for that purpose. If you are considering plywood instead, see our marine plywood range and confirm that the selected product is suitable for the intended exposure.

Sheet options.

What sizes and thicknesses are available?

We stock MEDITE Tricoya Extreme in the following sheet sizes:

Sheet size Thicknesses
2440 × 1220mm 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm and 18mm
3050 × 1220mm 18mm

Tricoya is also manufactured in other thicknesses, including 4mm, but availability should be checked before specifying a non-stock size.

Cutting services.

Can Tricoya Be Cut, Routed and Painted?

Yes. Tricoya can be machined using conventional MDF woodworking methods, making it suitable for panel cutting, CNC routing, profiling and detailed joinery. However, its exterior performance does not remove the need for correct fixing, coating and installation.

Machining & finishing.

Tricoya Cut to Size

Tricoya is a premium sheet material, a good cutting plan can help reduce waste. We offer Tricoya cut to size on the panel saw and can also provide CNC cutting for routed shapes, lettering and detailed panels.

For projects requiring additional preparation, we also offer panel edgebanding and spray painting, subject to the suitability of the required finish and application.

Send us your dimensions through our boards cut to size service and we can help you choose the right sheet, thickness and cutting approach for your project.
