Is Fundermax compact laminate waterproof?

Fundermax compact laminate is highly water-resistant and suitable for wet and humid environments, including washrooms, changing rooms and toilet cubicles. Unlike MFC, it has a solid, resin-based core that does not swell like chipboard when exposed to water. However, correct installation, drainage and ventilation are still important.

Does compact laminate require edgebanding?

No. Compact laminate has a solid black core that can remain exposed after cutting, without requiring sealing or edgebanding. Edges can also be rounded or chamfered if desired. However, edges cut on our beam saw may have a slightly rough finish. Customers will need to sand the cut edges on-site to achieve a smooth, professional finish.

Can compact laminate be cut and drilled using standard woodworking tools?

Yes, although its high density makes it considerably harder to machine than MFC or MDF. Carbide-tipped or diamond tooling is recommended for clean cuts and longer tool life. CNC routers and suitable panel saws are ideal, while drilling requires sharp bits and appropriate feed speeds to avoid chipping.

Can compact laminate be used for both horizontal and vertical applications?

Yes. Fundermax compact laminate is suitable for vertical applications such as toilet cubicles, lockers, partitions and wall panels, as well as horizontal applications including vanity tops, benches, tables and work surfaces. Appropriate support and fixing methods are essential, particularly for larger horizontal panels.

How should compact laminate panels be fixed together?

Compact laminate can be assembled using suitable mechanical fixings, specialist adhesives and appropriate joining systems. When using screws, pilot holes and allowances for panel movement are important. Fixings should be selected according to the application, panel thickness and expected loading.

Are both sides of Fundermax compact laminate decorative?

Yes. The boards in this collection have decorative surfaces on both sides, with the same decor and FH finish. They are supplied with removable protective film to help prevent scratches during transport, machining and installation. The film should be removed from both faces after installation.

What is the difference between compact laminate and moisture-resistant MFC?

Compact laminate is a solid, high-density board made from layers of resin-impregnated paper, offering excellent water, impact and wear resistance. Moisture-resistant MFC has a chipboard core with decorative melamine surfaces and is better suited to furniture and fittings in humid environments where direct water exposure is limited. Compact laminate is generally the better choice for demanding washroom applications.
