D&T Department

Birch plywood, MDF and hardboard are the core materials used in most D&T departments for student projects, demonstrations and workshop furniture. Common requests include 6mm and 9mm MDF for cutting, birch plywood, and 18mm MDF for workshop jigs and teacher demonstrations. We supply full sheets and cut-to-size panels so orders can be tailored to a specific project brief without excess waste. All sheets are cut in-house and ready for collection or delivery, saving preparation time in the workshop.

Stage and Drama

MDF is the most commonly used material for school stage sets, rostra, flats and scenic panels due to its smooth surface and ability to be shaped and painted cleanly. Our CNC routing service can cut shaped profiles, arched panels, lettering backings and set pieces directly from your drawings, removing the need for on-site jigsawing. Panels can be spray-primed before leaving the workshop so the drama department can paint directly on arrival. Furniture Repair and Replacement

When a classroom cabinet door, drawer front or storage unit panel becomes damaged, finding a finish that matches the existing furniture is the main challenge. We hold over 800+ MFC decors in stock including boards from Egger, Kronospan, Xylo Surfaces, Swiss Krono, Cleaf and Alvic, covering the most common school furniture finishes. Bring a sample or board reference to our North or South London showroom and we will identify the closest available match. Replacement panels are cut to size and edgebanded before dispatch, arriving ready to fit with no additional finishing required on site.

Science Lab Fit-Out

Science labs place specific demands on materials due to regular exposure to water, chemicals and heavy use from students. We supply moisture-resistant MDF and MFC for areas near sinks and benching, and structural plywood for shelving, storage units and worktop substrates that need to carry load reliably. Panels are cut to size and edgebanded in-house, and installation is typically carried out during school holidays when access is available. Our team can work directly from a cut list or drawings, which is useful when coordinating with a main contractor or fit-out team.

Library and Reading Spaces

School libraries and resource centres often require a mix of new shelving components and replacement panels for existing units that have become worn or damaged. For replacement work, panels can be matched to existing decors from our large collection of MFC finishes and cut to the exact dimensions needed. New shelving runs are cut to length with edgebanding applied before dispatch, keeping site work to a minimum. Our full sheets come in various sizes from 2440 x 1220mm to 3050 x 1525mm and available for CNC machining.

SEND and Specialist Classrooms

SEND suites, nurture rooms and sensory spaces have specific requirements around safety, finish quality and the absence of exposed edges or sharp profiles. We supply routed MDF panels with fully sealed edgebanding, shaped to remove corners and protrusions that would not be suitable in these environments. Spray priming is available for panels going into rooms where a specific paint finish will be applied as part of a therapeutic or sensory colour scheme. CNC routing allows precise cutouts for cable management and built-in storage hardware, keeping surfaces clean and unobstructed.

What We Can Supply

MDF Cut to Size

MDF is one of the most widely used materials in school environments. It machines cleanly, takes paint well, and is cost-effective for both large installations and small repair jobs. Common applications include replacement back panels for classroom storage units, display board backings, painted cabinet doors and drawer fronts for school kitchens and staff rooms, shaped panels for stage sets and art department projects, and interior fit-out components for refurbishment works.

We cut MDF in all standard thicknesses including 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm and 25mm. Moisture-resistant MDF is also available for kitchens, changing rooms and other areas where humidity is a factor. Our in-house spray coating service can prime or finish MDF panels before they leave the workshop, reducing finishing time on site and allowing panels to arrive ready to install.

Plywood Cut to Size

Plywood is suited to heavier-duty applications where MDF or MFC would be insufficient. Schools and facilities teams use it for structural shelving in D&T rooms and science labs, flooring substrate and stage platform decking, workshop benching and tool storage, external hoarding during maintenance works, and backs and bases for bespoke joinery.

We supply hardwood-faced plywood, birch plywood and structural plywood grades in a range of thicknesses from 6mm through to 25mm. Birch plywood is particularly popular for D&T rooms and school workshop furniture due to its clean face and consistent core. Structural grades are available for load-bearing applications, and all sheets can be cut to size in-house with straight cuts and shaped profiles available to reduce preparation time on site.

Melamine-Faced Chipboard for Furniture Repairs

Melamine-faced chipboard, known as MFC, is the standard material used in most school furniture, storage units and fitted joinery. When panels become damaged or worn, finding an accurate colour and finish match is essential.

CNC Routing

Our CNC service gives schools and contractors access to precision-shaped panels without on-site machining. We handle cable management apertures in classroom and library desks, shaped back panels for built-in storage, stage and set components, ventilation grilles, service panels, and repeatable parts for D&T and workshop projects.

We work from DXF files as standard and rout MDF, MFC, plywood and veneered sheet materials. If you have drawings in another format, contact us before placing your order and we will advise on what is possible.

What Schools Need to Know

Cut-to-size sheet materials remove the need for on-site cutting, reduce waste and save significant time for school maintenance teams and contractors. Cworkshop processes your cut list in the workshop and delivers or makes ready panels that are accurate to plus or minus 0.5mm — meaning they fit first time without adjustment.

MAT estates teams and multi-site maintenance contractors can submit consolidated cut lists covering multiple locations. You can label panels by room, site or reference number on request to simplify distribution after delivery.
