Cworkshop's How To

A guide to furniture fittings

An introduction to

Furniture fittings

If you are putting together any piece of furniture, whether for your own home or for that of a client, the chances are, you are going to need furniture fittings. At Cworkshop, we know just how important these often disregarded elements are, and that's why in addition to our services (panel cuttingedgebandingCNC cutting and spray painting) and our extensive sliding door and shaker door catalogue, we also provide a wide range of furniture fittings, for all of your construction needs.

Our fitting selection is not only aimed at carpenters, builders and woodworking professionals, but also customers facing their own DIY project - many of whom may need assistance knowing where to begin! That's where this Furniture Fittings Guide comes in.

While often small in size, furniture fittings are incredibly important - they are the hardware components that make your drawers, cabinets and doors functional, giving them the ability to work as intended. However, as important as these accessories are, what is even more important is that you find the type that is suited to the project at hand. This poses a challenge in itself, as the huge amount of hinges, drawer runners and boxes available for purchase can quickly become overwhelming. After reading this guide, you can be sure that the fittings you will be purchasing will be no less than perfect for the design project that you have in mind.

Choosing the Right Furniture Fittings

When selecting fittings for your project, numerous factors are likely to influence your decision. As more often than not, you will be purchasing these items in bulk, and the various types are plentiful, it is worth considering each of these factors prior to making your purchase.

Material

Arguably the most important factor to consider when it comes to purchasing fittings, their material not only influences the look of the furniture in the kitchen, living room, or wherever else it will be placed, but also its strength, durability, resistance and more. Amongst our range of fasteners and fittings you will find options comprised of stainless steel, polished brass, and more.

Manufacturer

In the case of furniture fittings, it is very important to check for a reliable manufacturer. This is especially important when selecting looks and door handles. Look for guarantees and warranties. You should also check for compliance with industry standards. This means that the company’s products meet the minimum standard for safety. At Cworkshop, we use the highest quality furniture fittings manufactured by Blum, a brand known for its quality and durability.

Functionality

What use is hardware if it is not fit for purpose? Our range of door hinges, drawer slides and drawer boxes have been designed specifically to offer you the best experience possible when using them. On each individual product, we include an in-depth product description detailing its key functional elements, as well as information on weight (kg), size (mm), and more, so you can take comfort in knowing that your hardware will perform exactly as expected in your kitchen, living room, or bathroom. As you may know, many furniture components have special functionalities so it's important to know what type of furniture fittings you need.

If you wish to check the functionality of your accessories in person, pay a visit to our London-based showroom.

Aesthetics

When choosing your furniture fittings, you want to consider the aesthetics of your fittings themselves as well as the way they will make your furniture look. Think about the interior aesthetic you want and where this furniture will be. You probably want your cutlery tray in the kitchen to look and function completely differently from the drawers in your bedroom wardrobe. Do you want visible or concealed hinges? Handle-less kitchen drawers that glide open at a touch? Hinge arm covers and hinge boss covers to hide the screws? What materials do you want to use? The decorative features of furniture fittings are important things to consider when thinking about which fittings to choose.

After considering these factors, you're ready to start selecting furniture fittings. Here's our guide to what our different types of furniture fittings do and how to know which one is right for you.

Different types of furniture fittings

Runner systems

When using the right drawer runners, opening and closing doors can become a pleasure. Designed to allow for a soft close of your wardrobe and cabinet doors, as the name suggests, drawer slides significantly reduce the likelihood of drawers jamming and becoming trapped when either opening or closing. Drawer runners work by using ball bearings or nylon rollers to keep the parts in motion, while a spring mechanism in the drawer runners pulls the draw closed again.

Blum's Movento runner system uses low-friction nylon rollers to slide effortlessly open and closed. The drawer runner system allows you to easily adjust the front height, tilt adjustment, and side depth. Blum's Blumotion S technology uses three motion technologies:

Blumotion
Blumotion
Provides soft and effortless closing for drawers
Tip-on Blumotion
Tip-on Blumotion
Adds the easy-opening function to the soft-closing technology
Servo-drive
Servo-drive
lets you open handle-less drawers with just a light touch, regardless of their weight

Here are some of the drawer runner systems you might use:

Blum - Movento Blumotion S Runners With Locking Devices - Kit

These 40kg capacity full extension drawer runners have built-in Blumotion soft close and locking devices. They are available in sizes from 300mm to 550mm. If your furniture has inset drawers, you can separately purchase a depth adjustment device (see below).

Blum - Movento Depth Adjustment Device - Pair

Working in conjunction with the above Movento drawer runners, this depth adjustment device can be directly installed to adjust the depth by plus or minus 2mm.

Blum - Tip-on Blumotion - Set

This set brings together the Tip-on mechanical opening system with Blumotion's soft-close technology on one runner. This means it's effortless to open and smooth to close. The recommended weight for the pull-out is up to 20kg and the width should not be less than 294mm. This set can be used for Movento and Legrabox drawer runners.

Blum - Tip-on Blumotion Synchronisation Linkage

Working with the above Tip-on Blumotion devices on Blumotion S runners, this linkage device connects the sides for synchronised runner movement. At 1125mm, we recommend it for drawers with a width of more than 600mm.

Hinge systems

Hinge systems are essential for the performance of cabinets, closets, cupboards, display cases, and just about any type of furniture that features an opening and closing door.

Cabinet hinges come in a wide variety of types, including:

  • exposed hinges
  • concealed hinges
  • European hinges
  • mortised hinges
  • no-mortise hinges
  • ball bearing hinges
  • butt hinges
  • barrel hinges
  • wraparound hinges

Don't get overwhelmed by all the different types of door and cabinet hinges - it's easy to figure out which ones you need. Here at Cworkshop, we specialise in concealed hinges. Concealed hinges are cabinet hinges that cannot be seen from outside the cabinet that they are supporting. The benefits of concealed hinges include that they are hidden and therefore don't distract from the appearance of the furniture. Concealed hinges are especially popular on frameless Euro-style cabinets.

At Cworkshop we offer three main types of cabinet hinge systems.

  • The Blum Clip Top range is the classic: adjustable, easy to install, and attractive
  • The Clip Top Blumotion range integrates Blumotion soft-close technology for even more effortless closing of your cabinet and kitchen drawers
  • The Inserta Clip Top hinges have the option of coming with or without integrated Blumotion soft-close technology

Here are some of the more specific types of hinges you might need for your DIY project.
