In the 1980s, MDF was developed to serve the growing flat-pack furniture market. MDF is made by breaking down wood waste into tiny fibres, mixing it with urea-formaldehyde, and then putting it under heat and pressure to solidify it. At first, MDF is made into huge sheets, and then it is cut into smaller ones to serve the market.

MDF is manufactured with unique properties and comes in different kinds: Moisture resistant (green fibres), Fire retardant (red fibres), High-density, Ultralight, Coloured, etc. MDF is not a decorative product but, due to its smooth surface, it can be laminated with a layer of wood veneer, acrylic or melamine, or just covered with paint using a brush or a spray gun. As a wood-based product, MDF is very versatile and has become widely used in furniture mass production and bespoke projects.
